Six Secrets of 'Slumdog' Success

"Slumdog Millionaire" is not your average Oscar contender. It's not about WWII survivors or tragically flawed geniuses. It doesn't star Kate Winslet, Cate Blanchett, or Meryl Streep. Instead, "Slumdog" has no big-name actors, a miniscule budget, and a good chunk of the flick was shot in Hindi. With the film racking up four awards at Sunday's Golden Globes, plus taking home five trophies at last week's Critics' Choice Awards, "Slumdog Millionaire" has become an unlikely front-runner for Oscar gold. So why has this movie, which as late as last spring looked like it might be released straight to DVD, become such a huge hit with both critics and audiences? Here are a few reasons:

1. Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?: In these days when TV financial experts are having full-blown conniption fits on air and the US economy is nose-diving its way into the next Great Depression, who doesn't want to be a millionaire? But if you think our country is in dire economic straits, it's nothing compared to the slums of Mumbai that are featured in the movie. So it's a real thrill to watch the character of Jamal (played by Dev Patel) go from the most abject poverty imaginable to the final round of the quiz show that could make him wealthier than he ever imagined. And apparently, the use of the one-time national sensation as a framing device in "Slumdog" has inspired ABC to bring the quiz show back to TV this summer, just in time for its 10th anniversary.

2. An Incredible Story: "Slumdog" might feel fresh and new but its story is essentially a good old fashioned melodrama, complete with dizzying highs, dismal lows, and a fairy-tale ending. The movie was based on a bestselling Indian novel called "Q&A." Veteran screenwriter Simon Beaufoy -- previously Oscar nominated for "The Full Monty" -- spent months in India researching the real conditions of the young children just barely getting by in Mumbai's poorest areas. Then he added the stirring love story to tie everything together. The resulting movie left audiences cheering.

3. Director Danny Boyle: Boyle has been the oddball wunderkind of British cinema for over a decade. He first came to international attention with "Trainspotting," perhaps the most entertaining movie ever made about the dangers of heroin addiction. And his "28 Days Later" is a slick and engaging movie about blood-thirsty zombies and the collapse of society. With his potent blend of over-caffeinated action and heartfelt emotion, Boyle was uniquely qualified to make a feel-good fable about abject poverty and child slavery.

4. Actress Freida Pinto: Simply put, she's gorgeous. A former model with no prior acting experience, she was the ideal casting choice for the dreamgirl who inspires Jamal to risk everything. The Mumbai-born Pinto quickly became an internet sensation, and she made several "Breakout Stars of 2008" lists. Never underestimate the box-office draw of a pretty face.

5. The Tourist Factor: For those whose only exposure to India might have been phone calls to customer service and the odd curry dinner, "Slumdog" is an eye-opener. Boyle resisted stepping back and shooting the movie like a travelogue. Instead, he thrusts the audience into a street-level view of the sights and sounds of India -- from the slum's crowded back alleys to the new gleaming towers of Mumbai, from the Taj Mahal to a stomach-churning outhouse. When you watch "Slumdog," you feel like you've been to India.

6. Bollywood: Remember back during the early '90s when Tinseltown did a collective double-take about wildly over-the-top flicks coming out of Hong Kong, movies like "The Killer," "City on Fire" and "Supercop"? It wasn't long afterwards that the likes of John Woo and Chow Yun Fat were making movies stateside and Hong Kong choreographers like Yuen Woo-ping were in high demand to add some kung fu spice to films like "The Matrix." Well, the same might be happening now with Bollywood.

In 2005, one India's largest film distributors -- Yash Raj films -- revealed that Indian movies make over $100 million a year in the States. Bollywood diva Aishwarya Rai is appearing in more and more Hollywood movies including the upcoming "Pink Panther" sequel. That being said, "Slumdog" is essentially a love letter to Bollywood. Not only does the movie feature two of India's biggest stars -- Amitabh Bachchan and Anil Kapoor -- but "Slumdog" also ends with that staple of Indian cinema: the lavish dance number. Is it only a matter of time before intricately choreographed musical routines show up in your average Sandra Bullock flick?

So, like the film's protagonist Jamal, "Slumdog Millionaire" has gone from being a complete underdog to being a major contender for the top prize. Of course, Golden Globes have a spotty track-record in predicting Oscar winners. In 2006, "Brokeback Mountain" looked poised to take Best Picture after winning big at the Globes, but its buzz crested early for the notoriously fickle Academy voters and the movie lost to "Crash." Will "Slumdog" suffer a similar fate or will it triumph? We'll get the final answer when the Academy Awards air on February 22nd.

Former 100m gold medalist Linford Christie says cricket is a game and not a sport and shouldn't feature in the Olympics.

For someone who represented the inventors of cricket in athletics, Linford Christie sure is opposed to the inclusion of the 'game' at the Olympics. The former 100m Olympic gold medalist (1992 Barcelona) and world champion is in India as the athletics expert for a TV channel, and believes that cricket cannot be classified as a 'sport'.
The 48-year old Briton was quick to add that he was aware of India's cricket-obsession, but strongly believes that the Olympics are all about individual prowess and team sports, including football, do not make sense to him as Olympic events. Christie also made a tongue-in-cheek remark about the Olympics being a non-paid event, possibly in reference to the amount of money in cricket today.
Christie was on the same Beijing-Delhi flight as India's newest sporting icon Abhinav Bindra, and was asked to wait inside the aircraft while the shooter got a hero's welcome. Citing the example of the Chinese hold over the Beijing Games medal tally, Christie said that China had done a better job in spotting talent and moulding them. The mantra for Olympic gold medals is simple according to Christie - find the talent and have good infrastructure to groom them for bigger things.

Sada Dosa - the regular dosa.
Masala Dosa - a dosa with a potato, fried onion and spices filling.
Egg Dosa - a dosa spread with an omelette.
Chilli Dosa - idli powder is spread on the dosa.
Onion Dosa - chopped and sautéd onions are spread on the dosa.
Ghee (thuppa/neyyi) dosa - ghee is used instead of oil while frying the dosa.
Butter Dosa - butter is used instead of oil while frying dosa and a small amount on top of it while serving.

Six sixes in a six-ball over, cricket's fantasy overs.
On August 31, 1968, Gary Sobers became the first man to hit six sixes off a single six-ball over in first-class cricket.[1] The over was bowled by Malcolm Nash in Nottinghamshire's first innings against Glamorgan in Swansea. Nash was a seam bowler but—somewhat rashly, as it turned out—decided to try his arm at spin bowling. This achievement was caught on film.

The feat was repeated by Ravi Shastri in 1984 , playing for Bombay against Baroda, in Bombay[2] .

On March 16th, 2007, in a match between South Africa and the Netherlands at the ICC Cricket World Cup, Herschelle Gibbs became the first person to hit six sixes of an over in a One Day International match. The over was bowled by Dutch bowler Daan van Bunge.[3]

On September 19th, 2007, in a match between England and India, Indian cricketer Yuvraj Singh hit six sixes off a single six-ball over in a Twenty20 international cricket match during the inaugural ICC Twenty20 world cup in Durban, South Africa. The bowler was Stuart Broad of England.

Be it a multiplex english version or a single screen theater playing a tamil dubbed version the Hollywood blockbuster movies are missing some of their own masala on screen. This aint a directors cut nor a the screens original cut as the Hollywood corporate pronounce, its the distributors cut. Since, the last part of The Lord of the Rings The Return of the King infamous 20-minutes climax chopping most, english films screen time are shortened by chopping of slow melodramatic to make more time for mass Bollywood movies 3-hr junks.

Not long ago to reduce the expense of three VCD's for a hindi/tamil the movies are shortened to a two disc non-dramatic which carry very less chemistry to viewer.

One can see these things happening since good old days. But now with multiplex system its getting worst with high priced tickets and screen time to fill-up time required for other shows.

Spider-man 3 had its romantic & musical scenes missing. Harry Potter 5! Sorry still cant figure out what it missed.

The Prabu starrer ‘Nalalya Saithi’ lifted the scene from the Hollywood sci-fi ‘The Abyss’, with then bomb-shell Kushbu doing the CPR with her bare fists. Now the most typical question from a superstar fan, how long can a human body survive after a cardiac arrest, medically 4-6 mins., but in a movies Hollywood horror film ‘The Frighteners’, the hero is sent to the undead world to find the truth about the dead villain for about half an hour, till the heroine performed CPR on a frozen dead hero.

So when Hollywood can, our Superstar can. Superhero equals Superstar. It’s always our Superstar Rajini.

Presidential election narrows down in prime-time news shows, suddenly the biggest monument of India is the fray. What, this isn't the presidential race. Ho, this is the race for the New7Wonders, the race for which the majestic temple complex Meentashiamman temple, Madurai din't make to the semi-final of 21 finalist. But does the Taj Mahal, an original seven wonders of the modern world, need to contest for the new seven wonders.

As often the news channels and sms services are making it sound more like a prestige of India is at stake. Not really, according to online Wikipedia before this seven wonders their was three more sets of seven wonders. The wonders of historic world, ancient world & modern world.

Only in the last set does the Taj figure. The Egypt Pyramids are the only wonders to figure in all the different sets of the seven wonders. Perhaps it time for the newer and wonders of the unknown world for its time of fame. When initial plans to shoot a battle sequence in Russia using the Russian army fell through, the film's producers suggested a more perilous alternative.
"They said, 'We're going to have to shoot in Kashmir,' " Page recalls. "I said, 'Hang on, isn't there a war going on up there at the moment?' And they said, 'Yes, that's where the army is, that's why we've got to go there.' I said, 'What if they start fighting while we're there?' And they said, 'Oh, it'll make great background.'
"The amazing part was the attitude of the army, that we could do what we liked with them, but they were freaked out about us bringing blanks into a war zone.
"We finished up shooting the battle scene with live rounds, so I did have to film the goodies and baddies separately."

One branch of profession that use to have nothing important other than in encyclopedea's online is the medical profession. Things have changed, but not in leaps, as compared to other professions in the post decade or so. My search for a Medical blog hasn't lead me perhaps there wasn't a log. Even the CNN Health said the top headlines remains unchanged, except for the strange AIDS promises or hike on drugs prizes from multinational companies.

But its my mother-land India with highly qualified doctors and a billion strong population promised a good health care. Political promises and high infective tropical climate adds to the bargain.

My effort for a moderate weblog on the medical stories, basically, came to a hault after only few entries. Chi and dengue fever, in the south and north have told me the need for a blog or a feature with regular inputs in a blog.

Along with a medical blog, a multimedia friendly blog site and a current affair blog. Blog with my collection of photos and videos on a blog and also a moblog on film and its posters or adv. have been spilling in my mind for some time. Lets see how forth.
